Guest Coaches must email Figure Skating Director, Cari Bowen, proof of insurance and clearances prior to their visit. Guest coaching fee is $25 per session--whether it is public or freestyle. Kristie Matthai is a former Senior-level competitive figure skater with more than 18 years of coaching experience. She represented the White Rose Figure Skating Club for 15 years, competing throughout the region and at the U.S. Figure Skating Senior Ladies level, including the South Atlantic Regional Championships. Kristie later continued competing in Adult Championship events and earned the title of Eastern Adult Sectional Champion in Championship Masters Junior–Senior Ladies. With more than 18 years of combined coaching experience in South Central Pennsylvania and the Baltimore area, Kristie has coached group lessons, private figure skating, and skating fundamentals. She enjoys working with skaters of all ages and abilities, with an emphasis on strong fundamentals, confidence, and helping each skater reach their individual goals on the ice.

Hello, I’m Coach Kala! I began my coaching career in 2008 with the Learn-to-Skate program and have been passionate about figure skating ever since. Before becoming a coach, I competed in countless competitions, including Mid-Atlantic and Regional competitions. I have completed both my U.S. Figure Skating Gold Tests in Freestyle and Moves in the Field. Throughout my coaching career, I have had the opportunity to work with skaters of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced competitive skaters. I have coached competitive skaters through (NQS) competitions and have had the privilege of training and learning under coaches Elsa Swenning and Cindy Bear. I specialize in Freestyle, Choreography, and Moves in the Field. I enjoy helping skaters develop strong fundamentals, build confidence, reach their goals, and discover a genuine love for the sport—whether they are skating for fun or pursuing competitive goals. Maddie has been skating for 18 years and is a double gold medalist. She competed on the East Coast, took part in multiple theatre productions, and has a love for the lost language of showcase! Maddie was trained by Kala Casagrande, Elsa Swenning, and Cindy Bear. She specializes in freestyle, spins, jumps, choreography, off-ice conditioning, and more. You can see her coaching Learn To Skate, Aspire, Off-Ice classes, or volunteering at Special Olympics. Along with coaching in both Excel and Well-Balanced track skaters, she is USFSA Core Coach Certified Outside of the figure skating world, she has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Special Education. As a coach, Maddie strives to empower her students, ages 4 to 81, to reach their goals and discover new heights

Hi I’m Kirsten! I have been coaching for 25 years working with skaters from their first steps on the ice through their Gold Skating Skills and Freeskate tests. I am a certified USFS instructor specializing in Skating Skills (Moves in the Field) and Freestyle. My goal as a coach is to instill a good work ethic and the love of the sport in all of my skaters. I am a former Skating Director at a rink in Maryland where I coordinated the learn to skate classes, taught summer camps, hosted skating shows and Learn to Skate USA events and competitions. I also helped to start the Towson University Figure Skating Club in 2003. As the former VP and President, I represented TU in various intercollegiate skating competitions, including Collegiate Nationals. I am super excited to be a part of an amazing team of coaches and work with some talented skaters!!

Hi, I’m Preston. I've been on the ice since learning to skate in York at age four, and I'm now entering my 11th season of competitive hockey. I’m thrilled to wrap up my youth hockey career back home in York, playing my final season alongside my brother, Ethan. I’ve been playing hockey since I was 5 years old. I started out doing learn to skate before joining a team. I’m going into my 10th year of travel hockey. I played for the York Devils until I was 11 and then played for the Palmyra Black Knights 2011 AAA. I played there for 3 years until I was 14 and went with them to AAHA Nationals 2 years in a row. Now I’m playing up on the 18U AA team with my brother, Preston, here in York. I’ve done many fun tournaments on other teams like going to Quebec, Canada on the Hershey Jr Bears where I was the assistant captain. I have trained under Cari Bowen for power skating throughout my hockey career. I also play hockey for my school, Dallastown.

Carson Widener
Carson Widener is a current defensemen for the 18 AAA Black Knight Academy out of York, Pa. Starting at age 3 at learn to skate, Carson has played hockey for 12 years at all levels, in-house to AAA with the York Devils and BKA. He has trained under Cari Bowen for power skating throughout his career. Carson hopes to continue his hockey career next year at either the Junior or Collegiate level.

Kiera Wolfe has been skating for over 20 years. She is a gold medalist and has competed in mutiple Mid Atlantic regionals, intercollegiate nationals, and showcase. Kiera has been trained under Elsa Swenning and Cari Bowen. She has represented the Penn State figure skating team for 4 years and has been a lead principle skater on Disney on Ice starring as Moana. She specializes in freestyle, spins, jumps, and loves to choreograph.

Sophie started skating when she was 4 years old in the Learn to Skate program, and has been skating ever since. Throughout the years she has done various competitions ranging from local to State Games of America, competing in categories such as: Showcase, Freestyle, Production, Synchronized skating, and more. She has been working with the Learn to Skate program for 11 years and has been a Junior Coach for 3. She loves working with skaters of any age (her students have ranged from 3 years old to 60!) with any goal in skating. Sophie is currently a senior at Penn State Harrisburg majoring in English, and is planning to continue her journey as a skater and coach as she finishes her education.
